A multi-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 49 at the Mississippi River Bridge resulted in the death of 71-year-old Willie M. Pointer of Poplar Grove. The accident occurred around 5:53 a.m. on Monday.
According to the initial investigation by the Arkansas Department of Public Safety, Pointer was driving a 2007 Nissan Altima south on U.S. 49 when a northbound 2012 Dodge Charger, driven by a 28-year-old male resident of Memphis, Tennessee, crossed into the southbound lane and collided with Pointer's vehicle. Following the initial impact, a 2014 Dodge Charger, driven by a 30-year-old male resident of Memphis, struck the 2012 Dodge Charger.
Pointer was pronounced dead at the scene. The other drivers involved were taken to Memphis Regional One for treatment of their injuries. The weather conditions at the time were described as freezing fog, with icy roads contributing to the crash.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Pending the investigation, the family of Willie Pointer could pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims are entitled to seek damages for the loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.
